AOPA Representatives Aid Members in South Australia
August 16, 2010
AOPA was recently contacted by a South Australian member who was concerned about a recent NOTAM (C0186/10) in relation to VFR flight planning within the Adelaide CTR. That NOTAM appeared to place restrictions on VFR flight that would inconvenience many members seeking to access the CTR, even outside peak periods.
AOPA made contact with Darren Olsson, our Airservices’ representative. An explanation of the intention behind the NOTAM, was quickly forthcoming, and though not reflected in its wording, alleviated our worst fears and allowed a clarification to be passed to the member concerned. At the same time, Airservices arranged for the matter to be listed as the first agenda item at the upcoming Parafield User Group Meeting.
AOPA is represented at at the South Australian Regional Airspace Planning and Advisory Committee (RAPAC) by long-time members and supporters, John Hudson and Ed Herring. John also serves as convener of the SA RAPAC and for more than 30 years has been actively supporting AOPA and promoting its interests. Thanks to John and Ed, many AOPA members’ concerns have been raised with the authorities and successfully managed over the years.
John Hudson diligently monitored the matter on AOPA’s behalf at the Parafield User Group Meeting. The result – the minutes record the clear statement: “The intent is not to prevent VFR aircraft from entering the AD CTR – it is for VFR aircraft to have a plan to remain clear should a clearance not be available or there are lengthy delays.”
This incident highlights the strength of AOPA in resolving significant issues for its members – but it also shows the value that GA receives from the great work of representatives such as John Hudson and Ed Herring. Many members may not be aware that volunteer representatives like John and Ed willingly give their time and energy to represent GA, often with little appreciation or support and we thank them sincerely for their efforts on our behalf.
